I am an immigrant, a naturalized citizen. English is my second language. I have major FOB tendencies that come out, like cool mom syndrome where I’ll try to translate a euphemism and it’s just not working. Or when I’m sick, my cravings are totally African things.
I went back to looking for a fashion internship, and that’s when I got an internship at Elle. Kristen Shirley interviewed me. The whole time I thought I was going to be the closet intern, but she said, “I’m Kate Lanphear’s assistant, so you’ll be her intern.” And I was like, “Excuse me?” That’s kind of when everything started for me because Kate became my mentor.
My taste and the decisions that I make are probably what make me different, but I believe this applies to all creatives. Our taste writes the tone for the work we produce. Usually mine involves some aspect of humor, at least that’s the type of work that I’m drawn to. I also think that we curate our own creative circles, and that can lead to some unique results.
